28 April 2009: BICMA response to the launch of UKRC Standards
For many years the Rehabilitation market has developed without purchasers having objective quality standards against which to test providers. The Bodily Injury Claims Management Association (BICMA) launched its own set of standards some time ago but these have not met with universal market acceptance.
BICMA welcomes the introduction of the Quality Standards by the UK Rehabilitation Council, and indeed contributed to the debate about their form on one of the Advisory Groups. It is hoped that these Standards will gain acceptance by the market, and that providers will strive to comply with the detail. Indeed it seems clear that most of the market leaders in the rehabilitation field already comply with almost all of the new requirements and will need to do little to bring themselves in line with the provisions.
Norman Cottington, President of BICMA, said “We welcome the introduction of these Standards and congratulate UKRC in producing these. Whereas it might be suggested that the Standards draft document was over-long and unnecessarily technical it seems that criticisms have been taken on board and that the final version of the Standards will be more user-friendly. Although there is no sanction for non-compliance, we assume that the market will eventually see these Standards as the benchmark against which any provider can demonstrate their excellence”.
BICMA will continue to advocate continued provision of rehabilitation services to injured claimants, and hopes that the UKRC will itself develop to champion the rights of accident victims in relation to the provision of health and vocational treatment.
