In 1995 a committee was formed to advise Rehab UK, a commercial rehabilitation provider, about the operation of their Disability Assessment Unit, which was set up to assess the treatment and rehabilitation needs of accident victims.

The concept had gradually been developed , by one or two far-seeing insurers, that if they were going to have to pay for medical treatment anyway, through the compensation claims system, it would be much better for both the claimant and the insurer to make funds available at the start of the claims process rather than at the end (see Rehabilitation).

The advisory committee comprised representatives of the insurance industry and claimant and defendant lawyers, under the chairmanship of Norman Cottington (then of Highway Motor Policies).

Eventually the committee severed its formal links with Rehab UK and became an independent committee.

First Aid Tips to Save the Life

It is always important to have at least a basic understanding of how first aid works. You never know what might happen to you or your friend. We wouldn’t be called humans if we could predict anything and prevent anything bad that could happen. So, we should always be prepared for what might happen. A proper understanding of how first aid works is more than enough to take care of wounds that could be caused by many things like burns, cuts, bites, etc.

What would you do to if you burned your hand while cooking?

Before knowing how to treat them, you should be aware of the types of burns that you can handle and those that you should call 911 for.

There are three types of burns:

First-degree burns – They are minor and will not cause you much long-term harm. They are very painful though. They turn red and later cause swelling of the skin.

Second-degree burn – It is also known as Partial Thickness Burns. They are majorly known to burn from blisters. They are much more painful compared to First-degree burns and turn the skin reddish in color.

Third-degree burn – These are the most dangerous and are the complete opposite of first-degree burns. They have long-term effects. It results in the skin looking white or charred. And, in some cases, it may not hurt at all because of the nerves being damaged and you might not feel any pain.

The first-degree burns and the second-degree burns (up to some extent) can be treated at home. Some of the ways to treat them are:

  • Expose the burnt area under cool running water. It reduces swelling.
  • Make use of antiseptic sprays, ointments, or any other medications required and apply them to the burnt area. It helps soothe the burns.
  • You should apply some sort of mild pressure to burn. Also, you should try and minimize any sort of external contact to the pain. Use a bandage or a cloth to cover it up.
  • If the pain becomes too much, take painkillers like Acetaminophen, or Ibuprofen.

Another way of getting yourself hurt is by getting minor cuts or scrapes. In that case, the things you can do are:

  • Get yourself cleaned up, especially your hands. You cannot let any bacteria or germs get into the wound. You probably will be using your hands for further steps, so, clean them properly.
  • Stop the bleeding by applying mild pressure. Be sure of not applying too much pressure. That may lead to more blood pressure. Use a clean cloth or a gauze pad. Keep applying pressure for a few minutes.
  • Clean the wound. Once the bleeding stops, clean the wound by exposing it to cool running water and apply some soap around the wound. Be sure to not get the soap on the wound, because it will burn and irritate your skin.

Treating bites and stings from animals is a lot of work. Most people fail in doing it properly because they are never prepared for it. Everyone thinks that is least likely to happen and tend to ignore it. Some of the steps that you should follow, in case, if something like that happens are:

  • DO NOT SCRATCH. It might be very irritating and that is why most people just try to scratch it off. It will not work.
  • You should first try and stop the bleeding with a piece of cloth or a bandage.
  • After that, clean the would with some water and apply some soap carefully.
  • Cover it up with another piece of cloth or a bandage.

You should be careful to recognize when to go to a doctor when you have got an animal bite. For instance, if some unfamiliar animal bit you, like, a bat, or a raccoon, or a skunk, you probably need a vaccine or a tetanus shot.
